National Fall Protection Stand-Down

OSHA kicked off the first ever National Fall Prevention Stand-Down from June 2-6, 2014. The Stand-Down was a tremendous success, reaching more than 1 million workers, more than 1 in 10 construction workers in the U.S. Across the country, companies of all sizes paused to discuss the importance of fall prevention. Almost 5,000 Stand-Downs were reported to OSHA, with participation in all 50 states and internationally.

Hank Hedges led the National Fall Protection Safety Stand-Down at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. There was 100 percent participation.

EM 385-1-1 Safety & Health Requirements Manual

When The Safety Company, Inc. started to teach the EM 385-1-1 Construction Hazard Safety Awareness Course for Contractors, Hank decided that we needed to make the USACE 2008 Edition of the Manual more user friendly. So we set out to do just that.

We had so many great compliments from our students that when the 2014 Edition was ready to be released, we knew we had to do the same with it. Hank Hedges and The Safety Company, Inc. staff went to work to make the 2014 edition even better and re-published it in it's entirety with color tabs for each section, color photos, more structure in the main body of content, a more in depth index system along with many other enhancements without changing the any USACE original text.

Our students who have taken our course since the new 2014 Edition was finished have been very pleased with the book. fall preotection china delkegation members were here to learn about protection and scaffolding regulations, technologies and best practices

Mr. Henry (Hank) Hedges, CSP, Vice President of The Safety Company, Inc. was selected to manage a reverse trade mission (RTM) for a group of 18 Chinese safety officials that were going to D.C., NYC, Chicago and Seattle. Mr. Hedges was chosen as the Professional Safety Expert to manage this event based on his extensive safety experience and education.

"Professional international safety experience enhances Mr. Hedges’ safety courses and consulting assignments from his collection of construction industry best safety practices that go beyond local safety regulatory requirements. This helps construction companies obtain more business by demonstrating a safety approach to their clients that sets them apart from competitors."

Among the 18 Delegates who were attending this event, the following representatives were visiting our country to learn about fall protection and scaffolding regulations, technologies and best practices:

We visited Genie/Terex and JLG Industries to learn about Aerial Equipment.

A visit to New York Department of Buildings and Department of Design and Construction for a presentation on Fall Protection and Scaffolding Issues for Construction of 1 World Trade Center. Hank was able to secure a visit for the delegation to go to the 103rd floor while it was still under construction. It was a treat for all of us to see.

The visit to OSHA Outreach Training Institute and a Meeting / Roundtable at Construction Safety Council (CSC). The delegation was able to see a live demonstration of fall protection.

While we visited Washington, DC the delegation went to the Construction site of the Washington Monument to see the unique scaffolding and meet with the crew who was doing the work.

Even through the language barrier it was evident that we all shared the same concern about the fall protection issues we face.
